NSE Holidays 2026: When is the Indian Stock Market Closed?

The NSE and BSE follow the same holiday calendar for the Equity and Derivatives segments. In 2026, there are 15 full trading holidays falling on weekdays.

1. Upcoming NSE Holidays in March & April 2026

We have several holidays coming up shortly. Note that Gudi Padwa (March 19) is a bank holiday but NOT a trading holiday.

3. NSE Holidays Falling on Weekends (No Extra Closure)

These major festivals fall on Saturday or Sunday in 2026, so the market remains closed as part of the regular weekly break:

  • Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramadan Eid): March 21 (Saturday)
  • Independence Day: August 15 (Saturday)
  • Diwali Laxmi Pujan: November 08 (Sunday) — Note: Markets open for 1 hour for Muhurat Trading.

4. Trading vs. Settlement Holidays: The Big Difference

Many traders get confused due to NSE holidays that when the market is “Open” but their funds don’t arrive.

  • Trading Holiday: No buying or selling of shares. The exchange is shut.
  • Settlement Holiday: The market is OPEN, but banks or clearing houses are closed.
  • Example: On Gudi Padwa (March 19), you can trade normally, but your money from trades made on March 18 won’t hit your account until March 20.

5. MCX & Commodity Market Timing

The Commodity market (MCX) often stays open in the evening even when the morning session is closed.

  • Morning Session: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Evening Session: 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM (often remains open on religious holidays like Holi or Ram Navami).
